Create a place for the things that move through the whole home

Whole-home organization works when frequently used belongings have predictable stopping points. Start at the entrance and follow coats, shoes, keys, post, laundry and spare bedding to their final storage locations. If an item is repeatedly left in the wrong room, its assigned home may be too far away, too full or too difficult to open with one hand.

Built-ins can use awkward walls efficiently, but they are not automatically the best first step. Test the proposed categories with freestanding baskets, temporary hooks or taped shelf outlines. A successful trial confirms the required width, reach height and capacity before permanent joinery is ordered, while also showing which possessions should be donated, repaired or moved to longer-term storage.

Prioritise stable wall fixings, ventilation around fabrics and shoes, and clear access to meters, sockets and heating controls. Choose washable finishes in entrances and mudrooms, then schedule a short seasonal reset so winter coats, sports equipment and guest bedding do not occupy prime everyday space all year.
